A brief history of Newport Beach

Newport Beach originated back in the 1870's when Captain Samuel S. Dunnels successfully steered his ship Vaquero through upper Newport Bay.  The principal land owners of the time, the McFadden brothers and James Irvine thought they had something, a "new port", and the name stuck.  The Mcfadden brothers decided their shipping business would do better on the oceanfront than in the inner bay, and proceeded to build a wharf.  This became the largest business in the newly created Orange County.  In 1906 the population in the area voted to incorporate and became the city of Newport Beach.

Today the residents of Newport Beach closely identify with one of the villages within the city - including Corona del Mar, the Harbor, Lido Island, Balboa Island, Balboa Peninsula, and West Newport - rather than Newport Beach itself

The Newport Beach of today is a tourist and boating mecca  with miles of large beautiful sandy beaches and a large boardwalk where one can walk, bike, and run while looking out on the ocean.  The harbor contains thousands of boats of all sizes, with many bay front homes.
